“Buy the Rumor, Sell the Fact”

July 28, 2016

Rumors have the ability to move markets. With almost 3 billion people on social media today, the social cloud tends to be the place to communicate rumors and often to set them straight. Having this knowledge before the market gives traders an incredible advantage. A fine example in recent memory is the Samsung-Tesla fiasco.

On June 7, Samsung shares rose 8.1% on the Korea Stock Exchange on rumors that the company would supply batteries to Tesla. The next day, Elon Musk set the record straight by announcing Tesla’s partnership with Panasonic on Twitter. The single tweet effectively obliterated $580 million of Samsung’s market capitalization.

On April 22, Sentifi captured rumors that Microsoft was looking to acquire LinkedIn. Rumors turned into fact on June 13 with Microsoft’s $26.2 billion acquisition of LinkedIn. Read about Sentifi’s insights on Microsoft-Linkedin here.

Using the same algorithms to detect the Microsoft-LinkedIn rumors, Sentifi built a Market Rumor widget that detects rumors on organizations in the Americas, Europe and APAC regions. The widget shows the week’s top 10 organizations having market speculation. Although it doesn’t detail the type of rumor (i.e. M&A, lawsuit, etc.) that you would get on Sentifi’s topic pages of a specific asset, one can still read the messages to find all the rumors on an organization.
